Description

Well, this was hard to categorize in dA's system. lol

The finished staff for my Elven Druid costume for Halloween '09! Don't mind the busy background of the pictures: they were taken in the upstairs computer room. rofl

The stick used to create the staff was found on a walk to the park one day in September and the leather and jewels were picked up from the local craft store. The symbols, a Celtic swirl and two runes were carved into it with a sharp Xacto knife in the time span of three hours or so, since wood is somewhat hard to carve with a such a small knife.

Meaning of the runes can be found at this helpful website here while the spiral symbolism can be found at a seperate, but also helpful, website.

The staff belongs to me, Flaming Chibi :iconflamingchibi:, NO ONE ELSE

 Nice, love the gems on it, but I see a problem; it looks like you've not stripped the bark off it nor vanished/sealed the wood, am I right? Wood rots after a little while, that's why it is always important to get rid of all the old bark or skin, sand the surface afterwards so that it's not rough or prone to giving people splinters, and then coat it all in wood-varnish (if you pick it up from a forest area after it's been raining, it's an especially good idea to wash it and spray it with disinfectant to get rid of all the germs) and mold-resister to prevent any mold from building. Doing all this will both make the wood look nicer and make sure it has a very long life-span.

I found a long branch in the woods on my university's campus, used it as a prop for a fight scene in one of my university projects, but the shape and length were so unusual (it seriously looks like a bow) I decided to keep it and take it home...I did look stupid carring a big stick almost taller than me home on the bus and through town, but it was worth it when I got it home. The thing is though I found it last autumn, but because I stripped the bark and varnished it; it's still in perfect condition. So take it from me; it may be a long process, but stripping bark, sanding and varnishing really does give a staff or other wooden item the best shelf-life.
